20th Anniversary SAE's

FedEx showed up at the door today. It was like an early Christmas. I had no idea what they were bringing.

It was my box full of 20th Anniversary SAE sets. They are SWEET! :birthday:

I'm not really into numismatic stuff, but do occasionally grab something if it catches my eye. These did, and I'm glad I acted on it. I'm going to guess that these sets go nowhere but up.

Did anybody else get theirs yet? I didn't think they were coming out this soon.

Guys; A heads up!!! If you want them graded and want to do it on your own? Read these instructions; http://www.collectors-society.com/ne...?IDArticle=405

It gets a little complicated, yet it isn't. In short, DO NOT OPEN the box! Not even the, Fed Ex box they come in. Box up the Fed Ex box and ship them off to, NGC or PCGS as is.

It will mean you cannot even look at the coins till they come back to you from, NGC or PCGS, but in the end it'll be worthwhile. You see, once you open up the box, you will not be able to have the, Regular Proof and Mint Strike coin labled as, 20th Anniversary-Only the, Reverse Proof!

If you don't care? Then this doesn't matter. As well, because the Reverse Proof is only sold in the set. It is in fact the only coin that can be sent in without all the above described mumbo jumbo, and come back with the, 20 Anniversary label. It is also the coin that will be worth the most!

PCGS has similar rules as well.

I recieved my ten sets, at the end of, October as so did a friend of mine. Sent both sets to get graded. One to, NGC one to, PCGS. Only 4 MS70's out of all 60 coins. Three PF70UC's and One MS-70. So I'm not even sure it was worthwhile???

IMHO - I think the smart way to do it is, Don't send them in to get graded and Don't open the box. Turn around and use the un-opened box as your main selling point in years to come.

Good-Luck.

I knew about these rules regarding "first strikes".....but I would think that the 2006 W would qualify as an "anniversary" coin regardless....just not always "first strike"...... go figure.

I know they can be purchased separate...but no other year has the W on a business strike....just doesn't make much sense to me.

I could also see the need if you are going for a "full" or "complete" set designation. Otherwise they should all be anniversary coins by virtue of the date.

First strike is a different story.

I would like to hear more from people about new bullion sets that might have a small edge in numismatic value with links to vendors. I am bullion oriented but am willing to pay a small premium for a slightly more interesting combination of coins.

Not sold out yet. I've been wanting a set of these and you scared me there. I just went to the USMint website and ordered a couple of sets, 1 for a present and 1 for me. It does show my order is on backorder status but should ship in 3-4 weeks.

This set just may end up being a really valuable one. You never know in advance. I've been buying 4 silver state quarter sets (10 or 11 coin) a year since the program started. I sure wish I had known that the 99 would be worth almost $500 a set. But then again, I wish I had bought more than $2,000 in Google stock.

Anyone know projected mintage on this set?

Tom - I may ne incorrect - but I also ordered a set - I hadn't earlier because it was sold out.........but when I ordered, it did say (again, unless I am incorrect) that it was sold out and it was on backorder IN CASE OF CANCELLATIONS.

So I ordered hoping the Mint got some credit cards that didn't go thru.

Did I misread?

The following is taken from the US Mint's page on 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets. I placed an order for this set 2 days ago and this message was not posted at the time.

"Orders have been taken that meet the maximum mintage level of 250,000 for the American Eagle 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Set. We will continue to accept orders in the event cancellations occur. Orders accepted after sell-out are considered next in line, and will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis against any remaining inventory that may become available. The United States Mint CANNOT provide information on specific customer placement status either online or by telephone. If paying by credit card, please be sure the expiration date is not before December 31, 2006. If we are not able to fulfill your order, you will be notified that your order was cancelled. If you paid by check, you will receive a refund. As with all of our products, the United States Mint reserves the right to accept or reject orders in any combination or options it determines to be in its best interest. "

Hope for us both you are right - cause that message was there 3 days ago when I placed the order and a couple of weeks before that when I first tried to get them.......I gave up, then thought, what the heck, "I'll get it a try - nothing to lose!"

Also - you will notice Billionaire got the same message about sold out I did two days back.

But I hope the very best for you!!! HONEST!

Let us know!

If one were to keep the set, never open the box that the mint ships it in, and just maintain it that way, what affect would that have on the value? My grandfather left me a box of five (5) 1971 proof Ikes that were shipped from the mint. They are in the origional, unopened blue box with the mint shipping label still affixed. A broker offered me $100.00 for the box a while back, but I didn't accept it. Thoughts on this concept for the 20th Ann SAE set?

My opinion - cause no one knows for sure yet - is that - if you are not going to get them graded - that would be the smartest thing you can do - and while I might get a couple of sets graded (if I am lucky enough to get any - I doubt I will) I will keep the rest in their sealed boxes. As the value of these coins goes up - and I am sure it will - it can only increase its value if its never been opened!

Again, just a numismatic opinion.

Cheers!

Re: 20th Anniversary SAE's

if you keep the box sealed from the mint unopened and then down the road try to sell it....how does the buyer know whats really inside the box?
it doesnt have a date stamp from the post office since they use fedex plus there is no invoice on the outer box.

Travis37 11-18-2006 09:27 PM

Re: 20th Anniversary SAE's

Having never ordered directly from the mint before, I guess I just assumed there would be an invoice on the outside of the box. That sucks!

They use their X-ray vision!
Do I have to do all the thinking around here????

OK, great point.....I am trying to remember when my Buffaloes came if there was an invoice or not.........

HOWEVER - if you sell it and they do not open it - then they will never know if they were ripped off or not - and if you DO sell it - say on Ebay - and its not what you say it is - they will let you know and Ebay will (in theory) hand you your ass........so its a good point but I think there's some sort of protection. I know I had some sort of invoice for my Buffaloes but it MIGHT have been IN the box, not on it!

Good thinking!

Sell them for the 100 bux.. put aside sentmentality......1971 Ikes catalog for about 5 bux a pop.....they will never ever be anything valuable, original box or not.....they are readily available .
